Day 2 – Pyramids of Giza and Step Pyramids of Sakkara
Hopefully you will have had a chance to get settled into your hotel last night and experience a bit of Egypt! The morning will start out bright and early with breakfast.
Once you are fueled up for the morning you will meet with your Egyptologist.
From the hotel you will first travel to the monumental Pyramids of Giza. One of the original seven Wonders of the World, the enormity and beauty of the pyramids will wow you. Take pictures, explore the pyramid complex, and learn about their history up close and personal.
Want to spend more time appreciating the pyramids? Don’t worry, we aren’t done with the Pyramids at Giza yet. Your time at the pyramids continues as you eat lunch (included in your program package) at a famous restaurant located nearby.
From the Pyramids of Giza you will travel to the step pyramids of Sakkara — another historic and unique set of pyramids that only Egypt can offer. Your live history lesson continues as you learn about the building of the step pyramids and their historic significance.
The rest of the afternoon and evening are yours to explore the area. Hit up the garden district or one of the hotels’ fabulous restaurants. You can relax by the pool, appreciating the view, or dive into modern day Cairo after a full day of living through history. Make sure to get plenty of rest and hydration because Day 3 is just as exciting as today was!
-Breakfast and lunch included
– Overnight at the hotel
Day 3 – Fly to and Explore Aswan
You will hop on a short flight (about 1.5 hours) to Aswan where an Egyptologist will meet you and take you on your tour of the city. The first stop is Philae Temple, an ancient complex central to the ancient religious world and a favorite topic and location for ancient writers. For the second stop, we will step away from temples and visit Kitchener Island, which, though small, has a lot to see. The island is located right in the Nile River and boasts a beautiful botanical garden.
After that you will check into a cruise that will be your home for a couple of days.
Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
Day 4 – Komombo Temple
Our one and only stop on the cruise today is the Kom Ombo Temple. The Kom Ombo Temple is a unique and somewhat uncommon double temple. One half of the temple is dedicated to the crocodile god, Sobek, who represents fertility. The other half is dedicated to the falcon god, Horus. There will be plenty of time to explore this temple and appreciate everything about it.
Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
Day 5 – Head to Luxor
We will be cruising our way over to Luxor, with one awesome stop on the way, the Temple of Edfu. This temple was built to honor Horus, the falcon god, the same god one half of the Kom Ombo Temple is dedicated to. One of the unique parts of this temple is how important the inscriptions are. Not only are they beautiful, but they provide a very crisp view into religion, temples, and life in ancient Egypt.
Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
Day 6 – Luxor West Bank
Though the last couple days will have been spent focusing on maybe one or two stops, today is jam packed with four iconic places. You will be visiting some the coolest places in Egypt. Your breakfast and dinner are included today.
The Valley of the Kings is probably something you learned about in history class. This valley is home to the tombs of 63 pharaohs and nobles. While not all of the tombs are open to the public, visiting the valley is an awesome stop on this 12 day adventure package. Located on the West Bank of the Nile River, you will tour the area where, for over 500 years, pharaohs and nobles were laid to rest.
The Hatshepsut Temple is another great stop on this long day of sightseeing. Though the cliffs at Deir el Bahari seem to dwarf this stunning temple, its size will amaze you. Located near the Valley of the Kings, this temple was used as a mortuary temple with which to honor Pharaoh Hatshepsut after who it was built.
The Colossi of Memnon are a set of massive statues set on a stunning backdrop of Egyptian terrain. These columnal statues were built in resemblance of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. While time has taken its toll on the Colossi of Memnon, they remain an iconic tourist location and give a peek into the ancient world.
Habu Temple, the temple of Ramses III is massive. About 150 meters long with tall walls and beautiful inscriptions and art, this temple is well preserved and was strongly built. This is a great stop on the tour and one that is sure to impress!
You will be staying in Luxor for the night and choose one of the following hotels (subject to availability).
With amazing unobstructed views of the Nile River and sitting right off the east bank of the river, this hotel is in an ideal location. It has also been recently renovated and is a Travelers’ Choice 2018 Award winner.
This hotel is as beautiful and elegant as the name suggests. Built in 1886 and hosting a wide variety of Royalties and celebrities, this hotel is truly fit for a king. Day 7 – Dandara & Abydous
Two stops today with breakfast and lunch included. The first stop is Dandera, a remote temple complex and one of the most well preserved temples from ancient times. You will see a lot of Greco-Roman influence in the buildings on this 40,000 square meter (almost 10 acres) compound.
The next stop is Abydos, an ancient city, one of the oldest in ancient Egypt. From an archeological standpoint, Abydos is imperative to our modern understanding of Ancient Egypt. One temple within the city, the temple of Seti I, has a chronological list of the dynasties of Egypt called the Abydos King List.
